Since its original design in 1972, but architect Desmond Muirhead, the 18-hole course at Haystack has undergone many renovations but remains an extraordinary example of mountain golf. Nestled in the Deerfield Valley of Southern Vermont, the course often appears deceivingly simple. Landing areas are generous on some holes, but hazards on both the left and the right, deep bunkering, and elevation changes make this course challenging. No. 11 affords breathtaking views from the tee, but a drop in elevation from tee to green of more than 150 should bring your attention back to the game. The club has a pro shop, but the billiard table in the 19th hole lounge makes for an enjoyable retreat after 18 holes.
