Nothing erases the bad taste of double-bogey like a plateful of post-round chow that takes the taste buds out of bounds in the best way possible. By that we mean into territory hitherto unexplored in the resort golf realm, that special place where haute cuisine and comfort food happily coexist.
In years gone by, mixing clubhouse atmosphere with high-end cooking was a region pretty much reserved for the private club member. Most public players were content with (or simply limited to) the standard burger-dog-club-sandwich lineup. Such fare fills the void well after a hard day of taking dead aim, but often does little for the soul.
Then a revolution took hold in 19th holes from coast to coast. As resort and upscale public courses popped up with incredible frequency in the 1990s and early aughts, the how-can-we-attract-more-travelers turf wars went to a new level. Food and beverage managers recognized the need to up their games; if the quickest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, the route is even shorter if that guy is a golfer. We love to eat as much as we love burying a 10-footer for birdie to take the last leg of a rabbit. And we’ll travel anywhere to find great food, just as we do with great golf.
Come to think of it, we’ve dined on rabbit in a golf setting, along with duck, quail, elk, rattlesnake, dover sole, lobster, crab — and, of course, copious quantities of beef, pork and chicken prepared and presented at a rarefied level that the world’s best chefs strive to reach every day, washed down with the world’s best beverages.
As we once said in these pages, it ain’t grandpa’s post-round food and drink anymore. It’s much, much better — as evidenced by the on-course and off-course hotspots our panel have put forth this Best of Everything issue. Hope you’re hungry.
