Wit or without? Whiz or Provolone? Pat’s or Geno’s? Decisions, decisions. You come to Philly to play golf, you need to ingest a cheesesteak. Maybe even more than one. Here are some local faves, some of them usual suspects and others off the beaten path. Remember, the messier the better. Enjoy.

Tony Luke’s Located on Oregon Ave., not far from the sports stadium complex in South Philly and perfect for before or after a game. Although its cheesesteaks were featured on the Food Network, the hot dogs with the special sauce are pretty good, too. Expect a wait. Info: tonylukes.com.

John’s Roast Pork Near the river on Snyder Ave. and not far from Tony Luke’s, this locate eatery has won numerous awards but is almost more famous for the pork. Only open for breakfast and lunch; lines can also be long. When you’re here, make sure to say hello to Mama Bucci. Info: johnsroastpork.com.

Mamma’s Pizzeria Just outside the city limits on Belmont Ave. in Bala Cynwyd, the mini here is plenty, even for big eaters. They use pizza cheese and don’t skimp in the least, but grab extra napkins. Closed Sunday and Monday. Info: mamaspizzeria.com.

Chink’s Steaks On Torresdale Ave. in Tacony section, dining here is like taking a step back in time. Just don’t offend anyone by asking for fries, they’ll point you toward McDonald’s. Info: 215-535-9405.

Pat’s King of Steaks Known to locals as just Pats, this well-known establishment on 9th St. near the Italian Market, was also featured on the Food Network and is known for its Cheese Whiz-smothered cheesesteaks. Info: patskingofsteaks.com

Geno’s Steaks Also featured on the Food Network along with its nearby rival, Pat’s, Geno’s has been a local fave since 1966. Info: genosteaks.com.

Jim’s SteaksLocated on South St. at 4th, this local hotspot first opened in 1939 and is worth a visit, if only to sample the ambiance of the surrounding area. Info: jimssteaks.com.
