Whether you’re looking for open spaces or tree-lined New England fairways, Juniper Hill Golf Course in Northborough has the layout for you.

The 36-hole facility offers 75-plus years of golfing tradition on two very different courses. Although the Riverside Course has a higher rating and slope, general manager Dudley Darling believes the Lakeside Course’s narrower fairways present the greater challenge.

Lakeside’s Carolina-style mounding can bounce your ball in or out of play, says Darling, whose family has owned Juniper since 1931, when Riverside was just nine holes. “You have to play it more conservatively.”

Built on farmland, the Darlings added nine holes to Riverside in 1953 and unveiled Lakeside in 1991. Riverside has undergone changes over the years, including the lengthening of some holes and elevation of some greens.

“The fairways are good for ‘grip it and rip it,’” says long-time Juniper golfer Weegie Dodd, “but the lengths on some of the par 4s are challenge enough.”
